    How to Play: Join up the names! Taking the last syllable/sound of the previous name, suggest another name (of an anime/manga character or seiyuu) with that sound in any part of the name EXCEPT the last syllable. Please post the new name (and the anime/manga it's from) in my shoutbox. (Just above this.) No consecutive entries, please -- you cannot play this one alone. XD
    When I get tired of reviewing, I'll pick one character from this list to feature in a post, regardless of whether I previously know him/her or not! :) That page will eventually be linked on this list.
    E.g....Hirano Aya (Seiyuu)--> (next one should have 'ya' in the name, NOT in the end) Okuyama Masumi (Nodame Cantabile) --> Misato Kaoru (Moyashimon).......

Saki 1 - Eye-Gleaming Yuri Mahjong!

Published by jennkei at 11:46 pm under 2009 Spring, First Impressions, Saki, anime Edit This

I liked Saki when I picked up the manga end of last year, and was psyched to find out the anime was going to be shown this season.

Some things were a bit unexpected — I thought Saki would sound more vague, less mature (somehow ; I also didn’t really expect her to blush that much, or even remember any hints of yuri from the manga. (Of course, not quite what I generally look for. :P) But overall, it was a great adaptation, in my opinion. Will definitely be keeping a lookout for this.

For those uninitiated, Saki is about mahjong — specifically, about a girl called Saki who has a strange skill when it comes to mahjong; she has the luck and skill to keep her score completely even. Due to years of playing with relatives who got grouchy if they lost and took her money if she lost, she’d decided playing even was the best defense mechanism.

She gets badgered into joining the mahjong club, which includes some pretty interesting people, including a high school division or something or other champion, Nodoka. (Who happens to be a beauty, and, in the anime, makes Saki constantly blush. Also unexpected) However, the person who really steals the show is the taco-loving Yuuki, voiced by Kugimiya Rie. (Whom I last heard in the first ep of the boob-bustin’ Queen’s Blade. XD) Her dynamic, decisive play and sheer cuteness left me feeling quite happy. :) \o/

A note: Those are really cool mahjong tables. Autoshuffle and arrange??

    @Panther: Yeah, I have no idea about the rules, but I’ll probably just watch it without knowing, haha!

    @Shin: Pfft, he has his taste, you have yours. :P I like Yuuki as well, though — she does steal the show. :)

    @M12: Aww. I haven’t been watching anything nowadays…sadly enough. But I’ll probably keep watching Saki. I mean, I did finish Hikaru no Go, and I knew nothing (and still know nothing) about Go. XD

    @wutupz: o.O

    As far as I knew..mahjong is 麻将 (ma2 jiang4), vs 麻雀 (ma2 que4 - sparrow) as seen in the anime, which is probably the romaji for mahjong in Japanese..

    And yeah, Eden of the East is good. :)
