[*Whatever By The Books*]

I starting watching Queen’s Blade expecting the worst, despite knowing from previous screenshots that the art was pretty darned competent. I should also note that it was hard to find a screenshot without boobies to put on the front page..SIGH.

Surprisingly, (maybe I’m becoming a stranger otaku >.>) I enjoyed it. If you ignore the overload of boobies. And boobies, boobies, everywhere, indeed, starting barely five minutes in, when Reina’s clothes get vaporised by Mero-I-spurt-acid-out-my-breasts-na. She gets saved by a wild-looking woman called Risty/Listy…unfortunately for Reina, Listy decides that the daughter of a rich baron would bring a good ransom, so she trusses Reina up and brings her home.

Fortunately for Reina, (or maybe not so, considering the emo moments she has about running away from home etc), she has two sisters who grab her and throw Listy in the dungeons. Claudette, the eldest, seems rather cold, and has electrical powers. Erina, Reina’s imouto, has an, uh, healthier-than-usual proprietary stance when it comes to her sister…

Listy breaks out of the dungeon, though, stealing a set of armour for Reina, who wants to ‘get stronger’ (typical.) instead of stay to be the obedient heir to the estate. Of course, Merona has to join in the party, setting fires with her laser eyes and/or the boob-acid-spurting. Unfortunately, Reina fights smart, and Merona finally dies in an explosion of booby acid.

In concept, it really does remind me of Zettai Shougeki — women engage in combat, possibly sans-clothes/with nipple-accidents. For Queen’s Blade, though, the art is MUCH more well-drawn, and the competition is overseen by cute angels (one of whom is Nanael), instead of some cheaty strange guy. Kugimiya Rie’s Merona was wonderfully-portrayed, and scarily cute. Her design is fascinating, right down to the hands cupping her breasts and the acid spurting. Or, like niisama says, lactic acid?! XD

Not so much enamoured of Reina, and kinda disappointed Merona died so fast, but the character designs for this are pretty interesting, so I might well continue watching! Music ain’t bad either. XD Though coming from a seasoned sound director (it seems, from all the work he’s done!) like Aketagawa Jin, perhaps this is to be expected? :)
