Touhou Anime 1: Musoukakyo - Mukyu~
Note: Gah, I think I’m capped…. -_- Took absolutely forever to finish this post/put it up..sigh. Bloody net capping!
Whoa, this one is on the net pretty darned fast. There was some hype behind this even before it was out…I, along with other touhou fanboys (i.e. niisama), was pretty interested in it, though I’d seen samples of the animation and wasn’t very impressed. -wry- The characters looked sadly pudgy to me.
I took a heckload of screenshots for just 20 minutes’ worth. (Had 105…cut them down to 57.) Visit the gallery here, read on for more summary and the screenshot slideshow, as well as the subbed (so fast!) videos! (Thanks to youtube, and alafista for giving me the heads up!)

The first few minutes is taken up by the trailer that I’d already seen, which, I suppose, acts as an OP. The episode proper starts off with Reimu and Suika preparing for the (summer?) feast at the Hakurei Shrine. (Poor Reimu: “So much for preparing the feast, only Suika showed up to help.”) But midway through the preparations, Reimu discovers that…-GASP- Her donation box is missing!
Aya (who is unexpectedly loli) offers to help Reimu find it, but Reimu is kinda skeptical about that. (Aya probably has somewhat of a reputation for being too nosy. -wry-) To convince Reimu, she flies off somewhere by activating a spellcard, and drags Marisa back to help look for the donation box. Of course Marisa doesn’t want to, so Aya blackmails her, haha.
Their search brings them to the Scarlet Devil Mansion (where Patch lives), because Aya says Patch seems suspicious. -laughs- In the mansion, Sakuya finds that the wine, tea, and food has disappeared overnight! Remilia mentions Patch’s reported some missing books too. Who could be the mysterious thief?
As an episode, I felt it was a good one, if a little short at 15 minutes or so. Still, I loved the action that went into it! (Reimu and Patch fighting in the library~) Since this was released at Comiket, I’m wondering whether it’s the first of more..? (The episode screen does say ‘1′…and it says ‘to be continued’ at the end)
The art was a LOT better than expected! (In fact, I’d say it’s better than Akikan. -wry-) The OP doesn’t do justice to the art; animation was pretty smooth. Only issues I have are with Sakuya’s hair (light purple, not silver?!), how Patch should look smarter, and Reimu’s hair…band thingys being a bit too long. XD (As opposed to, say, Zun’s zombie Reimu)
As a noob Touhou worshipper, I think the characters were written well — quite a few lines made me chuckle, like “I can see why Marisa-san borrows and never returns them.” said by Aya in Patch’s library. I liked the in-jokes…like Suika and her sake obsession, Meiling accidentally being called China by Sakuya…even for a non-touhou reader, these make for interesting characterisation.
All in all, I think Maikaze did a good job with this one. Will definitely be looking out for more!
